Education

Doctorate (PhD) in Theoretical Physics. Master’s degree in Education with a specialization in teaching Mathematics and Science. Bachelor’s degrees with more than 20 graduate credit hours in both Mathematics and Physics. I am a College professor, and In addition to English, I also speak German and French.

Experience

I have over ten years of experience in teaching college-level classes, both undergraduate and graduate. This includes the design of interdisciplinary classes and summer courses related to mathematics, computational science and brain science. My aim is to promote mathematical and scientific literacy in my students and overcome any reservations about mathematics and science they might have. This requires a lot more than just lecturing students about “facts” in mathematics and science. Rather it is necessary to teach students how to think in a mathematical and scientific way. Once mastered, this way of thinking becomes an intellectual “Swiss knife” which benefits students far beyond the specific course. A prerequisite for acquiring such a mindset is a motivation to learn about mathematics and science. In my experience strong motivation is created in the students when connecting mathematics and science to applications, fun (games, stories, art), or the philosophy of science. I use all of these strategies along with brain based and individualized approaches. In addition to being a teacher I am also a seasoned researcher in the fields of computational biology and brain science. In my research I use mathematics and computational approaches to study biological systems. Furthermore I develop advanced data analysis algorithms and implement them in computer programs. I enjoy working with culturally and linguistically diverse students and many of them continue to contact me for advice or to let me know where they are on their career paths even long after completion of their classes. Classes I am teaching and/or am tutoring include Developmental Mathematics (MAT 0029), Topics in Mathematics (MGF 1106, MGF 1107), Intermediate Algebra (MAT 1033), College Algebra (MAC 1105), Trigonometry (MAC 1114), Pre-Calculus and Algebra (MAC 1140), Business Calculus (MAC 2233), Calculus 1 (MAC 2311), Calculus 2 (MAC 2312), Calculus 3 (MAC 2313), Differential Equations (MAP 2302), Discrete Math (MAD 2104), Linear Algebra (MAS 3105, MAS 3108), Vector Calculus (MAS 3156), Number Concepts (MAS 3205), Abstract Mathematics (MGF 3301), Geometry (MTG 3207, MTG 3212), Path to Statistics (STA 1001), Symbolic Computations (COP 4313), Analysis (MAA 4211, MAA 4212), Complex Variables (MAA 4402), Combinatorics (MAD 4203), Graph Theory (MAD 4301), Numerical Analysis (MAD 4401, MAD 4402), Cryptography and Coding Theory (MAD 4471), Differential Geometry (MTG 4254), Partial Differential Equations (MAP 4341), Statistics (STA 2023, STA 3024, STA 3027)
